The Meaning Of New Moon
The Purpose Of New Moon
1.
For Renewal Of
Life
28 Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the LORD,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the LORD
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:28-31
2.
For Deliverance
And Restoration
Sing aloud to God our strength;
Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob.
2 Raise a song and strike the timbrel,
The pleasant harp with the lute.
3 Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon ,
At the full moon, on our solemn feast day.
4 For this is a statute for Israel,
A law of the God of Jacob.
5 This He established in Joseph as a testimony,
When He went throughout the land of Egypt,
Where I heard a language I did not understand.
6 "I removed his shoulder from the burden;
His hands were freed from the baskets.
7 You called in trouble, and I delivered you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Psalms 81:1-7
3.
For Worship
22 "For as the new heavens and the new earth
Which I will make shall remain before Me," says the
LORD,
"So shall your descendants and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass
That from one New Moon to another,
And from one Sabbath to another,
All flesh shall come to worship before Me," says the
LORD.
Isaiah 66:22-24
Biblical Accounts Of New Moon
1.
David And
Jonathan
5 And David said to Jonathan, "Indeed tomorrow is
the New Moon , and I should not fail to sit with the king to eat. But let me
go, that I may hide in the field until the third day at evening. 6 If your
father misses me at all, then say, 'David earnestly asked permission of me that
he might run over to Bethlehem, his city, for there is a yearly sacrifice there
for all the family.' 7 If he says thus: 'It is well,' your servant will be
safe. But if he is very angry, be sure that evil is determined by him. 8
Therefore you shall deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your
servant into a covenant of the LORD with you. Nevertheless, if there is
iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your
father?"
9 But Jonathan said, "Far be it from you! For if I
knew certainly that evil was determined by my father to come upon you, then
would I not tell you?"
1 Samuel 20:5-9
24
Then David hid in the field. And when the New Moon had come, the king sat down
to eat the feast. 25 Now the king sat on his seat, as at other times, on a seat
by the wall. And Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, but David's
place was empty. 26 Nevertheless Saul did not say anything that day, for he
thought, "Something has happened to him; he is unclean, surely he is
unclean." 27 And it happened the next day, the second day of the month,
that David's place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, "Why has
the son of Jesse not come to eat, either yesterday or today?" 1 Samuel
20:24-27
2.
Elisha And The
Shunamite Woman
18 And the child grew. Now it happened one day that he
went out to his father, to the reapers. 19 And he said to his father, "My
head, my head!"
So he said to a servant, "Carry him to his
mother." 20 When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he sat on
her knees till noon, and then died. 21 And she went up and laid him on the bed
of the man of God, shut the door upon him, and went out. 22 Then she called to
her husband, and said, "Please send me one of the young men and one of the
donkeys, that I may run to the man of God and come back."
23 So he said, "Why are you going to him today? It
is neither the New Moon nor the Sabbath."
And she said, "It is well." 24 Then she saddled
a donkey, and said to her servant, "Drive, and go forward; do not slacken
the pace for me unless I tell you." 25 And so she departed, and went to
the man of God at Mount Carmel. 2 Kings 4:18-25
The Manner Of Worship
1 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "The gateway of the inner
court that faces toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the
Sabbath it shall be opened, and on the day of the New Moon it shall be opened.
2 The prince shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gateway from the
outside, and stand by the gatepost. The priests shall prepare his burnt
offering and his peace offerings. He shall worship at the threshold of the
gate. Then he shall go out, but the gate shall not be shut until evening. 3
Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the entrance to this gateway
before the LORD on the Sabbaths and the New Moons.
4 The burnt offering that the prince offers to the LORD
on the Sabbath day shall be six lambs without blemish, and a ram without
blemish; 5 and the grain offering shall be one ephah for a ram, and the grain
offering for the lambs, as much as he wants to give, as well as a hin of oil
with every ephah. 6 On the day of the New Moon it shall be a young bull without
blemish, six lambs, and a ram; they shall be without blemish. 7 He shall
prepare a grain offering of an ephah for a bull, an ephah for a ram, as much as
he wants to give for the lambs, and a hin of oil with every ephah. 8 When the
prince enters, he shall go in by way of the vestibule of the gateway, and go
out the same way. Ezekiel 46:1-8
6 "With their flocks and herds
They shall go to seek the LORD,
But they will not find Him;
He has withdrawn Himself from them.
7 They have dealt treacherously with the LORD,
For they have begotten pagan children.
Now a New Moon shall devour them and their heritage.
Hosea 5:6-7
The Consequences Of Neglect Of The New Moon
1 Thus the Lord GOD showed me:
Behold, a basket of summer fruit.
2 And He said, "Amos, what do you see?"
So I said, "A basket of summer fruit."
Then the LORD said to me:
"The end has come upon My people Israel;
I will not pass by them anymore.
3 And the songs of the temple
Shall be wailing in that day,"
Says the Lord GOD —
"Many dead bodies everywhere,
They shall be thrown out in silence."
4 Hear this, you who swallow up the needy,
And make the poor of the land fail,
5 Saying:
"When will the New Moon be past,
That we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath,
That we may trade wheat?
Making the ephah small and the shekel large,
Falsifying the scales by deceit,
6 That we may buy the poor for silver,
And the needy for a pair of sandals —
Even sell the bad wheat?"
7 The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob:
"Surely I will never forget any of their works.
8 Shall the land not tremble for this,
And everyone mourn who dwells in it?
All of it shall swell like the River,
Heave and subside
Like the River of Egypt.
9 "And it shall come to pass in that day," says
the Lord GOD,
"That I will make the sun go down at noon,
And I will darken the earth in broad daylight;
10 I will turn your feasts into mourning,
And all your songs into lamentation;
I will bring sackcloth on every waist,
And baldness on every head;
I will make it like mourning for an only son,
And its end like a bitter day.
11 "Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord
GOD,
"That I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,
But of hearing the words of the LORD.
12 They shall wander from sea to sea,
And from north to east;
They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD,
But shall not find it.
13 "In that day the fair virgins
And strong young men
Shall faint from thirst.
14 Those who swear by the sin of Samaria,
Who say,
'As your god lives, O Dan!'
And, 'As the way of Beersheba lives!'
They shall fall and never rise again."
Amos 8:1-14
Exhortation
16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or
regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things
to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your
reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into
those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19
and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit
together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.
Colossians
2:16-19
